Ariba (NasdaqGM: ARBA - News) shares gained 15% after the company said its fiscal first-quarter net loss widened to $4.1 million, or 6 cents a share, from a year-earlier loss of $3.7 million, or 6 cents a share. The Sunnyvale, Calif., business software company said excluding stock compensation and amortization of intangibles, income was $9.5 million, or 13 cents a share. Revenue grew to $77.2 million from $76.2 million a year earlier, while subscription and maintenance revenue increased to $34 million from $33.1 million a year earlier. Analysts, on average, expected first-quarter earnings of 9 cents a share, on revenue of $75.9 million, according to the average Thomson Financial estimates.
